“Abs! Abs! Abs!”

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) commissioned a study to compare a variety of abdominal training exercises, as well as some popular abdominal training products, with the traditional abdominal crunch. ACE selected the University of Wisconsin—La Crosse’s Clinical Exercise Physiology program to administer the study. The results of the study appear to indicate that a traditional abdominal crunch, when performed correctly, is hard to beat from a cost and an effectiveness standpoint. However, this finding should not be construed to mean that a single exercise is the “correct” choice for all training purposes and that a variety of exercises should not be utilized.
