“RICE: The End of an Ice Age”

Athletic trainer Joshua Stone makes the case that the application of ice post-injury does nothing towards facilitating the healing process. As support, he provides an article written by Gabe Mirkin, MD. Dr. Mirkin is the physician that coined the acronym “RICE” which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Dr. Mirkin’s article makes a thoughtful argument for removing ice from the treatment protocol for injuries with the possible exception of immediate, short-term application to address pain.
