“Rethinking Percentage Based Training”

This article by Tony Gentilcore takes a balanced look at the pros and cons of using percentages of a 1-rep max (1RM) as a basis for programming your training or that of your athletes/clients. As I mentioned in my comments regarding a similar article that I linked to this blog (https://functionalsportsperformanceblog.wordpress.com/2014/04/18/why-percentages-fail-some-lifters/), there can be drawbacks to percentage-based training, particularly for more inexperienced strength trainers. With that being said, there are also some potential benefits to percentage-based training. Recognition of those potential benefits has led me to start training with Jim Wendler’s 5/3/1 system in an effort to get stronger.
