Coach Kelsey Reed comes to the defense of the powerlifts in training for sports. Exercises such as the deadlift, the squat, and the bench press (not to mention the press) certainly provide a significant “bang for the buck” in preparing athletes for participation in sports. For one thing, they are compound exercises (i.e., multi-joint exercises) that allow the trainee to target a lot of muscles at one time. As the time available for fitness training is always at a premium with athletes, this approach makes a lot of sense. Secondly, these exercises can be loaded to a significant degree. This allows an athlete to develop high levels of strength. As a coach, these considerations make the inclusion of the powerlifts a win-win when properly programmed for a particular athlete.
